January 28 is celebrated as Data Privacy Day (DPD) every year. The day aims to sensitize individuals and disseminate privacy practices and principles. From being a privacy professional to an internet user or a consumer, the onus of safeguarding privacy lies on every shoulder.

Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the January 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Data Privacy Day is observed annually on January 28. On January 27, 2014, the 113th U.S. Congress adopted S. Res. 337, a non-binding resolution expressing support for the designation of January 28 as “National Data Privacy Day.”

This initiative raises awareness among businesses and users about protecting the privacy of their personal information online and promoting internet usage. Data Privacy Day encourages events that spur technology that can provide control over personally identifiable information and compliance with privacy laws and regulations.

This year, January 28, is an extraordinary day for the Council of Europe, the entire global Data Protection community, and, above all, for every individual protected by this essential right. This year, January 28, is the 43rd Anniversary of Convention 108, which opened for signature on January 28, 1981.

For 43 years, Convention 108 has influenced and shaped the protection of privacy and data protection in Europe and beyond. Its modernized version (Convention 108+) will continue to do so.
